The Archaeology of Difference by
What distinguishes an individual or a group in ancient society? How do issues of gender, ethnicity, social stratification and the view of the 'other' impact individuals, groups, and societal attitudes? Foucault in his classic work, The Archaeology of Knowledge, observes that layers of information embedded in language and society often elucidate the unspoken assumptions that individuals, groups or societies hold most dear. What is perceived to distinguish one group can carry such symbolic power that whole societies structure their laws, gender roles, ethnic identities, and views toward the "other" in the light of perceived differences. The ancient world was dominated by such differences. Clothing, hair, costume, housing, gender, religion, set apart one from the other. Ascertaining the rules governing difference in antiquity is challenging. Such rules were generally assumed, not clearly delineated. To determine "the archaeology of difference" the studies in this volume draw on textual and material culture. How does archaeological data illuminate gender or ethnicity or interactions and views of the "other"? What in the archaeological evidence elucidates the attitude toward women's role in society or Jewish perspectives on the Gentiles or attitudes toward the dead? What in texts illuminates the "other" especially as it relates to the writer's or narrator's perception?

Piecing Together the "Mosaic Called Diversity" : One Community College's Experience with Hiring a More Diverse Faculty. by
Community colleges are faced with the need to hire not only more new faculty, but also a more diverse faculty. Although community colleges have a disproportionately large number of minority students, the numbers of minority faculty are low. Because state and federal affirmative action programs are under increasing attack, community college administrators are somewhat limited in their ability to influence policy and procedural changes regarding this issue. The role of community college faculty involvement in the hiring process is not well documented. In order to answer the question of how community colleges can hire a more diverse faculty, the author guided the study with two subsidiary questions: (1) What are the policies and procedures for the hiring of full-time faculty? And (2) What strategies are being considered for hiring a more diverse full-time faculty in the future? Twenty participants who had observed various aspects of the current faculty selection process were selected and agreed to participate in in-depth interviews. Twenty-six faculty and staff were selected and agreed to participate in concept mapping research. The author found that a cornerstone of the affirmative action process seemed to be wider distribution of advertisements for available positions than had existed in the past at the college studied. Access & Equity for All Students : LGBT Student Needs by
Access and equity for all students in California colleges and universities have always been high priorities of the California Postsecondary Education Commission. The Commission has conducted research, gathered data, and made recommendations to expand opportunities and improve outcomes for all students in the state’s postsecondary systems. Recently, the Commission turned a spotlight on two groups of students whose challenges may not be as visible as race/ethnicity, poverty, or language, but whose success on campus is affected by equity issues. These groups are students with disabilities and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) students. The Commission’s concern led to formation of an Access and Equity for All Students Advisory
Committee that is exploring the issues of both of these groups — and is treating these groups as separate
and distinct. This report focuses only on LGBT students, and will describe the remainder of the process that Commission staff will pursue in this research.

Building a Consensus for the Development of National Standards in History by
This document presents a research project that examined the process used by the National History Standards Project to build consensus for the development of national standards for teaching history in U.S. schools. Among the contentious issues on which the National History Standards Project had to reach consensus were: (1) content versus process; (2) the place of western civilization in the teaching of world history; and (3) the inclusion of minority contributions in the teaching of U.S. history. This dissertation is a case study that creates a chain of evidence with explicit links between the questions asked, the data collected, and the conclusions drawn. Multiple sources of evidence include primary data, participant observations, with purposeful group interviews conducted to corroborate the evidence. The conclusion reached in this study is that the National History Standards Project achieved a substantial and broad consensus of historians, professional associations, precollegiate teachers, and a wide spectrum of civic, educational, professional, and minority associations to write national standards for history. How the consensus building process of the National History Standards Project might be applied to similar situations is also discussed. Contains 184 references. (Dk)
Capturing Social and Behavioral Domains in Electronic Health Records by
Substantial empirical evidence of the contribution of social and behavioral factors to functional status and the onset and progression of disease has accumulated over the past few decades. Electronic health records (EHRs) provide crucial information to providers treating individual patients, to health systems, including public health officials, about the health of populations, and to researchers about the determinants of health and the effectiveness of treatment. Inclusion of social and behavioral health domains in EHRs is vital to all three uses. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act place new importance on the widespread adoption and meaningful use of EHRs. "Meaningful use" in a health information technology context refers to the use of EHRs and related technology within a health care organization to achieve specified objectives. Achieving meaningful use also helps determine whether an organization can receive payments from the Medicare EHR Incentive Program or the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program. Capturing Social and Behavioral Domains in Electronic Health Records is the first phase of a two-phase study to identify domains and measures that capture the social determinants of health to inform the development of recommendations for meaningful use of EHRs. This report identifies specific domains to be considered by the Office of the National Coordinator, specifies criteria that should be used in deciding which domains should be included, identifies core social and behavioral domains to be included in all EHRs, and identifies any domains that should be included for specific populations or settings defined by age, socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, disease, or other characteristics.
An Integrated Framework for Assessing the Value of Community-Based Prevention by
During the past century the major causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States have shifted from those related to communicable diseases to those due to chronic diseases. Just as the major causes of morbidity and mortality have changed, so too has the understanding of health and what makes people healthy or ill. Research has documented the importance of the social determinants of health (for example, socioeconomic status and education) that affect health directly as well as through their impact on other health determinants such as risk factors. Targeting interventions toward the conditions associated with today's challenges to living a healthy life requires an increased emphasis on the factors that affect the current cause of morbidity and mortality, factors such as the social determinants of health. Many community-based prevention interventions target such conditions. Community-based prevention interventions offer three distinct strengths. First, because the intervention is implemented population-wide it is inclusive and not dependent on access to a health care system. Second, by directing strategies at an entire population an intervention can reach individuals at all levels of risk. And finally, some lifestyle and behavioral risk factors are shaped by conditions not under an individual's control. For example, encouraging an individual to eat healthy food when none is accessible undermines the potential for successful behavioral change. Community-based prevention interventions can be designed to affect environmental and social conditions that are out of the reach of clinical services. Four foundations - the California Endowment, the de Beaumont Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation - asked the Institute of Medicine to convene an expert committee to develop a framework for assessing the value of community-based, non-clinical prevention policies and wellness strategies, especially those targeting the prevention of long-term, chronic diseases. The charge to the committee was to define community-based, non-clinical prevention policy and wellness strategies; define the value for community-based, non-clinical prevention policies and wellness strategies; and analyze current frameworks used to assess the value of community-based, non-clinical prevention policies and wellness strategies, including the methodologies and measures used and the short- and long-term impacts of such prevention policy and wellness strategies on health care spending and public health. An Integrated Framework for Assessing the Value of Community-Based Prevention summarizes the committee's findings.

The concept of "authenticity" enters multicultural politics in three distinct but interrelated senses: as an ideal of individual and group identity that commands recognition by others; as a condition of individuals' autonomy that bestows legitimacy on their values, beliefs and preferences as being their own; and as a form of cultural pedigree that bestows legitimacy on particular beliefs and practices (commonly called "cultural authenticity"). In each case, the authenticity idea is called on to anchor or legitimate claims to some kind of public recognition. The considerable work asked of this concept raises a number of vital questions: Should "authenticity" be accorded the importance it holds in multicultural politics?
