Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have played a key role in American history since the first Chinese immigrants arrived in the U.S. in the 1850s following the California Gold Rush. That’s why May is recognized as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month.

AAPI stands for Asian American and Pacific Islander. The term is used to describe a diverse and fast-growing population of 23 million Americans that includes roughly 50 ethnic groups with roots in more than 40 countries.

History of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month

Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month is observed annually in May. The purpose of this month is to honor the history and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islands Americans to the United States. Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month originates from Asian-Pacific American Heritage Week, which was established in 1978. In 1990, Asian-Pacific American Heritage Week was expanded into Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month has also been observed under the name "Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month."
