Arab Americans are a diverse community of immigrants and the descendants of immigrants, 3.7 million strong, who have come from throughout the Arab world. We are Syrians, Lebanese, Egyptians, Palestinians, Iraqis, Jordanians, and Yemenis—from North Africa to Southwest Asia. Our ethnic community is diverse in faith, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, and ability.
The Arab American National Museum documents, preserves and presents the history, culture and contributions of Arab Americans. Includes online primary resources and exhibits.
Arab America and the Arab America Foundation launched the National Arab American Heritage Month initiative in 2017, with just a handful of states recognizing the initiative. Each year, our grass-roots network of over 250 Arab American volunteers in 26 states gathers hundreds of proclamations from their states, counties, municipalities, and local school districts.
Today’s Doodle, illustrated by Jordanian-American guest artist Sara Alfageeh, commemorates the 86th birthday of pioneering Egyptian translator and children’s author Notaila Rashed. Known affectionately as “Mama Loubna,” Rashed devoted her life to the creation and promotion of children’s literature. She helmed the influential Arabic children’s magazine “Samir” for decades and authored numerous beloved literary works for children and young adults alike. Through her books and short stories, she aspired to highlight ancient Egyptian literary traditions while showcasing the rich cultural heritage of contemporary life in her home country.
Today’s Doodle celebrates the 115th birthday of Hamed Gahar, a renowned Egyptian scientist, marine biologist and TV host. He is considered the founding father of oceanography in Egypt and the Arab world, and hosted an educational show called “Sea World” for 18 years.
