Every year, June is known as LGBTQ Pride Month in the United States. This month long celebration is in honor of the Stonewall Riots, which occured in Manhattan, New York in 1969. These riots eventually became the gateway to the Gay Rights Movement in the US during the 1970s. In this guide, you will find resources and books located in the Library, along with background history on important people and events within the Gay Rights Movement, for those interested in researching both the Movement and Pride Month.
Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.
