Creating Your Resume

There are two main styles of resumes: chronological and functional

Chronological: this type of resume highlights your employment history. You should use this type of resume if you have a lot of career experience in one field and are planning to apply for a job in that field.

Functional: this type of resume highlights your skills. You should use this type of resume if you do not have a lot of work experience, or if your work experience is in a different field from the job to which you are applying. This type of resume is ideal for first-year students or people who want to switch career paths.

Resume Examples

Ohio State Resume Examples
A resume is an opportunity to express yourself in a documented format. It should include a summary of your personal, educational and experiential qualifications. Together with a cover letter, the main purposes are to introduce yourself to a prospective employer and explain how your qualifications can assist them. A professional resume and cover letter may lead to an interview.
Chronological Resume Sample
From Purdue OWL This style of organization is very conservative, and it is most useful for people who have work experience in positions which are closely related to their desired employment. This style is also most suited to people who have not had long periods of unemployment time between jobs. This format starts with the present, or most recent, job and progresses back in time.
Functional Resume Sample
From Purdue OWL This style is one of the most commonly used résumé styles, and it works well for people who have had internships or cooperative experiences. This type of résumé highlights previous work experience that has given you background experience for the job you are seeking.
Skills Resume Sample
The skills style is well suited to students who have gained valuable experience through a number of unrelated jobs and courses. This format is also appropriate for people who are making a significant change in careers. It emphasizes what you can do, not where you have worked. Applicable skills can be established through any activities that you feel will demonstrate your qualifications: courses, work, volunteer activities, personal life, and so forth.
