Black History Month: Educational Resources

A very thorough list of research guides and websites offered by BlackPast. The webpage is organized by subject and covers a broad range of topics including African American history, politics, science, arts, and more.

This is the online home of an exhibition that was curated by the Library of Congress in 2008. The exhibition is organized into 9 sections chronologically, from the era of chattel slavery to the Civil Rights Movement. Each section includes images of the primary source materials that are part of the collections in the Library of Congress.

Avoice is a project that was developed by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. in 2005 after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The mission of the project is to capture and preserve the history of participation of Black voices in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The online library contains “information about historical and contemporary African American policy issues important to researchers, academics, educators and students.”

This page gives a succinct yet thorough introduction to the history of the Civil Rights Movement, Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Act, Voting Rights Act, and Fair Housing Act.

An initiative of Stanford University, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute was founded in 2005. The Institute is a repository for Dr. King's papers and has an education initiative called The Liberation Curriculum that produces curriculum materials and lesson plans for educators, as well as providing teacher development workshops.
