November 2nd is the Day of the Dead - Dia de los Muertos. Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) is a two day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (Offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations! Day of the Dead is a rare holiday for celebrating death and life. It is unlike any holiday where mourning is exchanged for celebration. For more information please see the Day of the Dead - Dia de los Muertos LibGuide, the Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month LibGuide, and Latin American Studies in Credo LibGuide.
November is Native American Indian Heritage Month NAIHM. For more information see the Native American Studies in Credo.
Tuesday, September 17th is Constitution Day (Citizenship Day). The annual observance in the United States commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. This day is dedicated to celebrating and reflecting on the significance of the Constitution as the foundation of the American government and the rights and freedoms it guarantees. Constitution Day also serves as an opportunity to educate citizens about the Constitution’s role in shaping the nation and to promote civic engagement and awareness. Participation includes learning about the Constitution, attending local events, sharing the knowledge, participating in a Naturalization Ceremony, and reflecting on your rights. Resources can be found on the Constitution and Citizenship Day LibGuide, Primary Sources (United States History) LibGuide, Constitution-related Book Lists on the Library Catalog, and the United States Constitution Day Videos on Infobase Films on Demand.
